Meet Alaska! She came into GPMR with 5 of her relatives after being rescued by a local SPCA from a neglect situation. The breeder of these dogs was not providing adequate food or any vet care and turned them over to the SPCA. They were extremely underweight when they arrived at the SPCA. All of these dogs lived together and but were not socialized at all outside the home, and so in new situations they are very fearful. In their foster homes, they are doing great and do not show many signs of fear at all. We are working on leash training as only one of the dogs knew how to walk on a leash, the rest just dropped to the ground and wouldn't move. All of the dogs had fleas, intestinal parasites, and varying degrees of skin/ear/eye infections. The SPCA did an amazing job getting them started on the road to good health!

Alaska is a very sweet 2 year old girl. Having lived her whole life in a crate, she is very curious about anything and everything. She loves playing rough with the other dogs in the house, loves toys, chewing on bones and anything else that her mouth happens to run into! We are working on basic training and manners, learning to sit and take treats gently. She is mostly house trained and totally crate trained. She loves to snuggle and always wants to be near her people. She is super smart and is learning quickly. She is a joy to have around. Alaska would do best with a family who is willing to take her through a basic training class. She's made a lot of progress but still has a bad habit of jumping up and we're working to break her of that habit!

Alaska was adopted back in early December and sadly she was returned recently for fighting with the female Boston Terrier in the home. Because of that, we will not place Alaska with any small dogs. We've learned that Alaksa is a very bossy girl and she wants to be in charge of the other dogs in the home. If a dog challenges her, she will react. For that reason we'd love to see her in a home with another large size dog who likes to play and has a submissve personality. Previous to her adoption, Alaska was fostered with 3 boxers, both male and female, without any issues. So we think that she would be fine being adopted with another dog who doesn't mind letting her be the boss.

She is also a "talker" meaning she is very vocal dog, and when playing with her toys she barks and growls when she's playing. Alaska loves to chew on things so providing plenty of toys and crating when she's home alone will be required.

Alaksa does have a heart murmur which was evaluated by a specialist. She has a genetic condition called an subaortic stenonis which is a narrowing at the aortic valve. He said her case is very mild and she doesn't require any treatment for the condition other than an inexpensive medication that she takes daily and is expected to live a normal lifespan.

Because of Alaksa's history and puppy-like activity, a home with older kids 12+ would be best.

Alaksa is being fostered in Shawnee, OK.
