Foster Parents: URGENT NEED!

GPMR does not have a shelter or facility where we can house Mastiffs when they come into rescue. We are able to take Mastiffs into rescue because of our caring volunteers who foster those Mastiffs until they can find their forever home. We carefully screen those applicants interested in fostering by checking references (both personal and vet), a phone interview, and a home visit. We also require that your own dogs be current on all vaccinations and spayed or neutered. There might be additional requirements that will be discussed with individual fosters. We require monthly foster home updates, should you have your foster for that long. Foster Application

GPMR’S TOP 10 REASONS TO FOSTER:

10) Your dog needs a new playmate

 9) You enjoy slobbery kisses.

 8) Your commitment issues finally have a positive outlet.

 7) You need a few more muddy prints to complete your home decor.

 6) Teaching an old dog new tricks is fun.

 5) You’ve noticed your current “vacuums” aren’t doing their job.

 4) You need a few more smudges on your window to deter nosy neighbors.

 3) You just got a notice in your mailbox that you are way behind on your drool quota.

 2) You enjoy giving and getting unconditional love.

 1) YOU SAVE A LIFE!

Fostering FAQS:

1) How hard is it to give them up?

It depends. Some people fall in love with every dog they foster, some people enjoy the new dog but are ready for it to go when the time comes. Some dogs touch your heart more than other ones. I personally think that when you foster, you need to go into it with the idea that you are "dogsitting" for someone (their forever home). When you dogsit your friend's dog, you'd be willing to give it back, right? This is just extended dog-sitting.

2) How long does it usually last?

Fostering can last anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months, or sometimes even more (usually older dogs or mixes or special needs cases).

3) Do I have to take every dog that needs a home?

No. When a dog is in need of a foster home, we will send you an email and ask if you would be interested in fostering him/her. We will tell you a little bit about the dog (good with kids, good with dogs, good with cats, etc) and you can decide if this is a dog that you would like to foster, and if this is a good time. If not, just say no. No hard feelings. We understand. If you can, GREAT!

4) What kind of training will I get?

The Foster Coordinator will personally speak to all new fosters, over the phone. If you have any questions, we will set you up with a mentor who will help you with an initial problems, and the Foster Coordinator is also always available for calls or emails. you will also receive a foster handbook.

5) Do I have to pay for vet bills?

No, GPMR will reimburse you for medical bills and extraordinary expenses. You are responsible for food, basic care (baths, ear cleaning, nail trims, etc), and training/socializing. Obviously, you need to ok vet visits before we can reimburse.

6) What state do I have to live in?

Currently, we are looking for foster homes in the states of Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas.

7) How do I become a foster parent?

Please go to our website and fill out our foster application at www.greatplainsmastiffrescue.org/forms. Our Foster Coordinator will contact you promptly. This is the first step in getting you started as a new foster home.
